Hi there,

I've installed and configured Domino 8 and integrated it with AD. Though I'm able to create users in Domino, I'm not able to create using the domino sync tool in AD.

Error message is:'operation failed:user or group could not be found in domino directory'

I know one has to do some mappings of AD groups to the domino groups and that's where the problem is emanating, but cant figure it out. Can you please help??

Thanks

@1 Keith - I had actually heard of the OpenNTF solution and I believe a few of my customers were using it. It's a great tool! As you mentioned though, we didn't offer a solution within the client and hopefully this is a great first step to solving those issues. Thanks for the comment!

@2 Matt - Great questions! I should be able to answer your questions in some up-coming posts. Thanks for the idea about a detailed self-service password solution - I'll see if we can get some details out there on that one.

This is very cool stuff - particularly since there was a perception before LS 2008 that the ID file would be disappearing in a future release. I think this is a much better solution.

I'd love to see an article detailing how a self-service password reset system might be implemented. I'd also like to hear about how this affects ID deployment - a couple of examples:

- Would you still need to have the ID stored in the mail file to read encrypted mail in iNotes, or stored in the personal names.nsf for roaming?

- Could this system be used to manage deployment of multiple ID files to users who switch ID regularly? (i.e. take away the need for them to have the ID sitting locally on their computer)

- Does this mean we might be able to implement password strikeout on the Notes client?

Thanks :)

I actually developed an opensource solution to this problem for versions before 8.0 called the User Administration Utility which is hosted over on OpenNTF that took care of a lot of that. Users could via a website:

* Request their original id file be sent to them via email

* Request a new ID file be created if they didn't already have an ID file

* Request a rename and it would rename the person but an administrator would have to go in and switch to the ID and accept the name change

* Request recertification if their certifier had expired

This was all done via a web site and all password protected and access was controlled via reader/author fields. The password of the original ID file was stored so that an administration team had access to it and then the only other person that has access is the user and only via the web. There was also various amounts of information stored within a "person" document including the groups they are a member of and other notes specific information. It was a very handy utility, but with version 8.0 it broke the ID creation part of the app. But it's nice to see that IBM finally addressed this issue as it's been a sore topic to say the least.

Me again... *waves hand*. Love this blog.

As we (an ultra-heavy web shop) get ready to move on 8.0.2, I love hearing this kind of stuff.

Can we get some more technical details, though?

For instance, I know that 7.0 implemented a completely different semaphore structure from 6.x. We discovered this after we were experiencing horrible, unexplained semaphore deadlocks every 36-48 hours on 6.5.5 and 6.5.6. CPU at 0%, disk at 0%, resources galore, but multiple Notes server processes just hanging there waiting on a semaphore.

After several months of debugging, troubleshooting, etc. with Lotus Support, I asked if upgrading to 7.x might help.

"Hmmm... 7 does have an entirely different semaphore structure than 6.x..."

Well HOT DOG! I rapidly accelerated our deployment of 7, and voila - problem gone.

I've heard that 8.0 was the first release to obliterate the last of the old 16-bit memory handles. Is there anything else that can be revealed about 8.0 or 8.5?

I know that this sort of low-level stuff isn't as easily absorbed as benchmarks are, but some of us *are* formal computer scientists and can leverage these sorts of details in our products and businesses.

ok that's great to know but it raises another question.

Im potentially upgrading to 8.5 from 6.5 (or even if it was 7 for that matter) with thousands of roaming in my current environment. Estimating a rolling upgrade of clients over a few months (to allow for remote sites, training requirements etc) what happens when a user roams between a 6.5 client and an 8.5 client. Will the 8.5 server support roaming back to a 6.5 client? (I'm Assuming the earlier clients wont accept any roaming policy settings but hope the existing roaming databases from 6.5 should still replicate to the client) If not what's the plan? ;)

Roaming appears to be a major reason for a lot of people not migrating to 8.0.x Are there any plans for detailed documentation on how to transition in this scenario?

ssuming this works only the 6.5 databases will actually roam). I think this is an area that a lot of people will have a lot of questions about because a lot of people are waiting for 8.5 for this very feature.
